Friday, November 18, 2011
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today
named Dale Sveum the 52nd manager in franchise history, agreeing to
terms on a three-year contract with a club option for the 2015
campaign. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Sveum, who turns 48 next week,
brings 20 years of major league experience to the Cubs, including 12
seasons as a player and the last eight seasons on a major league
coaching staff with a stint as interim manager of the Milwaukee Brewers
in 2008. Sveum began his big league coaching career as the Boston
Red Sox third base coach in 2004, helping to guide the club to its
first World Championship in 86 years in his first season, and he led
the 2008 Brewers to the postseason as the club’s interim manager.
After his final season as a player
in 1999, Sveum quickly began his post-playing career by becoming
manager of Pittsburgh’s Double-A Altoona affiliate in 2001, a position
he held for three years. He led Altoona to its first-ever
back-to-back winning seasons in 2002 and 2003, including the club’s
first appearance in the Eastern League playoffs in 2003. Sveum
was named the 2003 Top Managerial Prospect in the Eastern League by
Baseball America.
Sveum
was named to the Red Sox coaching staff in 2004 and spent two seasons
in Boston, both playoff appearances, before joining the Milwaukee
Brewers coaching staff the following season. During his six
seasons with the Brewers, the versatile Sveum served stints as the big
league third base coach, bench coach and hitting coach. He was
named interim manager on September 15, 2008 and led the Brewers to a
7-5 record down the stretch and a spot in the playoffs as the National
League Wild Card.
Originally
selected by the Brewers in the first round (25th overall) of the 1982
draft, Sveum played for seven different teams during his 12-season
career at the big league level: Milwaukee (1986-88, 1990-91),
Philadelphia (1992), the White Sox (1992), Oakland (1993), Seattle
(1994), Pittsburgh (1996-97, 1999) and the Yankees (1998). Sveum
batted .236 with 125 doubles, 69 home runs and 340 RBI in 862 major
league contests. The former shortstop enjoyed his best season in
1987, producing career highs in nearly every offensive category.
Sveum
was born in Richmond, CA, and graduated from Pinole Valley High
School, where he played baseball, football and basketball, earning
All-State and All-America honors at quarterback. He turned down a
football and baseball scholarship at Arizona State University to
play professional baseball.
Sveum,
his wife Darlene, their daughter Brittane and son Rustin reside in
Scottsdale, AZ.

They might be
looking for new players too,
even before the Farm teams...
